Juicin’ it up!

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, I am looking forward to enjoying delicious food with family and friends. This time of year seems to be focused around indulgence, usually extending to the weeks prior and post, celebrating at work, socially, and with family. After this 1-2 month holiday season, I’m left feeling less energetic, exhausted and a little heavier.

To proactively combat these inevitable feelings, I am starting off the holiday season with some Green Juice (also known as Wheatgrass juice). I know by keeping health in mind at the beginning of the season, one is more likely to make it to January with a strong body and mind.

I’m hoping this works for me as well as you.


How to grow and juice wheatgrass:

  • Measure 1 cup of the seed to soak for 6-12 hours
  • Strain seeds
  • Get a cookie sheet (hopefully they aren’t all being used for sugar cookies!)
  • Lay newspaper on the cookie sheet then spread the seeds on top. Soak the newspaper, but make sure there isn’t standing water or the seeds will mold.
  • Put saran wrap over the cookie sheet then place in an area which doesn’t receive direct sunlight.
  • I usually put it on top of the refrigerator.
  • For 2-3 days keep covered, adding enough water for the newspaper to remain damp.
  • Uncover on the 3rd day, allowing the grass to grow for 3-4 days in the open air. It is necessary to add water to ensure the newspaper remains damp.
  • When the grass is 4-6 inches tall, cut the grass from the base (I like to think I am mowing the lawn with my kitchen scissors). Place grass in a blender with 4-8 cups of water. Blend grass and water for 30 second-1 minute.
  • Put a cheesecloth or nut milk bag in a 2 quart ball jar. Pour grass and water into the ball jar, straining the fibers from the wheatgrass. Squeeze the fibers, then throw this portion into a compost pile or garbage.

What to do with the juice:

There are two ways of enjoying wheatgrass juice. One way, which is my personal favorite, is pouring the juice into ice trays and freezing. This allows me to enjoy the wheatgrass juice for 2-4 weeks by putting an ice cube in my morning tea or water bottle. Another way is to keep it refrigerated and enjoy it 8 ounces at a time. Drinking more than 8 ounces at a time may lead to feeling sick, so stick to 8 ounces or less.
