Turkish Fig and Almond Butter Breakfast Bites

I am always looking for ways to make my morning routine quick and easy. This leaves more time to sleep, do a daily yoga/ meditation practice, or connect with family over coffee (see my coffee recipes here!). This recipe makes 18-20 Breakfast Bites, just enough to eat 2-3 a day for the week. They are a great portion size, eat one in the morning with coffee, followed by one or two mid-morning for a snack. They are also perfect before a workout. The slightly sweet, creamy flavors of the fig and almond butter couple nicely with the seed mix (think Omega 3s!), and who doesn’t love something covered in chocolate?!

Turkish Fig and Almond Breakfast Bites

30 Minute                    8 Ingredients                    Yield:18-20 Breakfast Bites


3 Dried Turkish Figs – soaked 2-4 hours (if using fresh figs, no need to soak them)

1 1/2 cups Almond butter

1 cup seed mix (equal parts pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, flax seed)

1 tbsp. honey

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1/2 tsp. sea salt

1/3 cup cacao powder

1/3 cup unsweetened coconut flakes


Using a food processor or stone pestle and mortar, grind soaked figs into a paste.

Add almond butter, mix until fully combined. Move this mixture into a bowl.

Add seed mix, honey, vanilla extract, and salt into the bowl with the fig and almond butter. Using your hands, mix all ingredients together (1-2 minutes). Set mixture into the refrigerator for 5-10 minutes. 20170306_091449

Place cacao powder and coconut flakes into two separate bowls. After 5-10 minutes in the refrigerator, the fig, almond butter, seed mixture should be set up. Using a 1 ounce scoop or making a ping-pong size ball in your palms, press mixture together firmly, roll in coconut flakes, followed by raw cacao powder. 20170306_092259

    1. Great question! I know soaking seeds allows the body to more easily assimilate the nutrients, but I’m afraid doing so will cause the bites to come apart. To keep the consistency and cohesion I would grind the seeds, then put them in the mixture. You can do this with a coffee grinder (hand mill or electric) or a mortar and pestle. Grinding them will also make them easier to assimilate. Let us know how it works!
